Last week, I was assessing Missy's body condition, and I was uncomfortable with how absolutely LORGE the gal looked.
Wide Load Wanda |
This summer, I've tried to forego muzzling her like I typically would because she tries to eat so aggressively that she wears her teeth (Green Guard even with leather insert) or sores her tongue (Flexible Filly, large or small hole).
She's dedicated to getting that grass. |
While this worked during the drought, once we got a good, soaking rain and our grass came back in full force, I noticed some increased fat deposits and a very round belly.
Most prominent to me, the fat pad behind her shoulder |
Also the start of an apple booty |
At this point, I'd put her at a solid 6.5, maybe even 7 body score, making it time for a change. Since Pyro has been able to use the lighter weight Flexible Filly muzzle this summer, that meant I had his old Green Guard with RUBBER insert available.

Missy modeling her very stylish look, complete with long nose fly mask against sunburn. |
My barnmate Jen has successfully used the rubber lined option without undue tooth wear for her cob Connor, so hopefully that will be the case for Miss too. Time will tell, and I figure even a little tooth wear is the lesser of two evils when compared to founder.
Girlfriend thinks I'm very rude for taking unflattering photos and limiting her grass intake. |
I had Miss in the crossties and was discussing this with the ladies at the barn. Jen piped in, "she's not pregnant, is she?" Cue me giving her belly an intense look...
Hmmm... |
While she appeared open at the 2 week ultrasound after her last cover (about 4 months ago), it's not unheard of for mares to sneak foals past the ultrasound, especially when they produce multiple follicles like she's known to do. Thankfully, I obsessively take photos of my horses to track body condition, posture, muscling, etc., so I compared her to this spring, before the breeding season, as well as when she was about 5 months pregnant with Pyro.

Before and after breeding season |
I was documenting when I could no longer use a flank cinch in 2018. |
With that distinct drop in her belly, we all started playing the very dangerous game (slightly less dangerous with horses than humans!) of "is she pregnant, or just fat??"
Meanwhile, she was still getting light work and daily muzzling. |
Thankfully, we were due to have our beloved vet out to administer fall shots, so I didn't have to guess long. He palpated her, putting me out of my anxious misery. It turns out she's very much NOT pregnant, just overweight and feeling the effects of gravity as she ages.
Missy: You try looking this good at 22 years old. |
He noted that her uterus was very firm in tone, and she was an absolute saint for palpation, standing in the doorway of her stall with no sedation. While I knew it was a VERY slight chance, I'm still a little bummed. However, it's probably for the best as I had already been making future plans knowing that she didn't take this year.
If she bucks me off, it's because I called her Wide Load Wanda one too many times. |
I'll continue to monitor her weight and tooth health as she uses the muzzle this fall, and have committed to 3-4 30 minute exercise sessions a week for the ol' gal (arthritis allowing). I'm grateful Miss is happy and sassy, and each day with her is a gift.
