The Dark Horse

A "dark horse" is defined as a candidate or competitor about whom little is known but who unexpectedly wins or succeeds.

Well...

As I discussed suitability and goals, you all didn't hear anything about a little, black, filly, but I'm so excited to introduce Ffrewyn First Impression, my very own dark horse who has succeeded in winning my heart (and infiltrating the Pinto Party).

It gives me butterflies to think that this filly is mine.

The Deets

Breeder: Jen Robertson of Ffrewyn Welsh, based in Ontario, Canada

Breed: Section D Welsh Cob

Color: Black, 3 socks, 1/2 a coronet band, a perfect star, and a pink bottom lip!

DOB: 25Mar2025

Sire: Ffrewyn Iconic, aka "Nicky"

Dam: Castleberrys Ravyn (Castleberrys Ffafr Ap Culhwch), aka "Rave"

She appears very people-oriented without being pushy, and her conformation should make her athletic enough and well suited for the low level adventures in dressage, jumping, driving, and trail riding I want to do. I've always loved her mother, and feel so lucky to have "Rave 2.0", as Jen describes her. She is the first foal for both parents, so I think Jen is as excited to see how she matures as I am. I'll share more thoughts later, but I'll leave you with a request to brainstorm barn names. (I've considered "Imp", a small, mischievous devil or sprite... but Pyro's barn name turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophesy, so I'm open to other ideas.) Oh, and a photo dump!

I saw this photo, looked across the table at my husband, and said, "heh, we're in danger". To his credit, when I later said I wanted to seriously consider buying her, he didn't look at me like I was a crazy woman. (I am, he just thankfully accepts my brand of crazy, lol.)

Perfect precious princess

1 day old and still unfolding

Beautiful Ravyn, even coated in mud

Catching snowflakes in Ontario

Starting to use those legs!

  1. I love, love, love her. Her momma is stunning and Jen is great. We visited the farm a couple of years ago and it's just good vibes and gorgeous friendly ponies all around :D

    1. That's wonderful to hear! I've not met her in person, nor will I likely get up to Ontario to see the farm for myself. However, she's friends with my other cobby friends, and one of them even bought a WB cross from her (Ffrewyn Hywel). They've had nothing but good things to say.

  3. OMG!!! CONGRATS!!! Her dam's name Ravyn made me think of bird names for her barn name... Finch, sparrow, vireo, wren. I can't wait to follow along (and see loads and loads of cute baby pics please 💕)

    1. Oh Debut is a new one! I'd end up calling her Deb though, and we already have a Deb (boarder) at the stable.
